What's On in Glasgow - Story Fest at St Enoch Centre

We've had a lot of fun lately with story telling, including our adventures with Disney for their Fit to Dance programme. My little ones love stories and story telling, so the Story Fest at St Enoch Centre sounds brilliant (it's just a pity that we're going to be sunning ourselves in Portugal!).

The St Enoch Centre is inviting you and your children to 'Story Fest' during the October holidays.

Story Fest is a 9-day festival dedicated to children's literature running from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th October with loads of activities from character visits from Dora and The Gruffalo, to creative workshops.

The most exciting event is 'Badger the Mystical Mutt'... Badger is a 6ft dog with a nose for adventure and he takes children on a magical journey involving songs and story telling. Badger is the star of a series of children's books exploring various issues, including bullying.

 Badger v MC Loki Rap Battle
Join Glasgow hip-hop star Darren McGarvey - aka Loki - and create your very own rap... suitable for ages 11-16 years.

Badger the Mystical Mutt runs in the St Enoch Centre on Thursday 15th Oct from 12-1pm and 2-3pm and is suitable for children 5-8 years old.

All events are free, but some are ticketed and must be booked in advance.

I have received a complimentary goody bag, containing an Optical Express voucher in exchange for this post - thank you St Enoch Centre :-)

Review - The Works at St Enoch Centre

The Works isn't typically a shop that I'd frequent, but I was invited along to visit the new store at the St Enoch Centre, Glasgow that opened the other week. I was told that it was filled with affordable crafts, toys and games; and they weren't wrong! I will most certainly be back as there were so many bargains.

I was gifted a £20 voucher and am amazed at all the bits and pieces that I managed to pick up. I've put it into a vlog for you so that you can see everything...

I received a £20 voucher for The Works in exchange for an honest review. As always, opinions are my own.

Books - Get Your Sh!t Together

I was in Copenhagen for work last week, and whilst I was travelling I had decided to read a new book called Get Your Sh!t Together (GYST) by Ruth Field, the author of Run Fat B!tch Run (which I haven't read but a friend has raved about it). I'm fairly organised but with everything going on just now I feel like there's more I could be doing to keep on top of things and I'm all for picking up new tips and advice.

I really enjoyed the book. I was reading it on my Kindle, and highlighted a number of pages to revisit.

The main take-home message is that once you start doing things, then it becomes easier to do more things:

"Everything you do is action-generating - the more shit you tackle, the more shit you are able to tackle"

I'm certainly finding that this is the case.

I've been getting more organised at the house - decluttering, rearranging and optimising locations for stuff... you get the gist. Anyway, once I finally got my sh!t together and actually made a start, it's becoming much easier to just keep going.

I got my first shelf up, and since then I've just kept going!

"The gritty truth is that human beings all thrive on doing stuff and even more so on completing stuff. We are less ourselves when we are inactive: we languish, we shrink. But when we are busy completing tasks and achieving things, no matter what they are or how big, small or insignificant, it somehow calls forth our better natures."

Some of the advice was obvious to me, like to cook in batches and this is something I try to do. Another tip is to simplify your life by dumping some sh!t - "when did you last use/look at/wear this? If the answer is: not in the last year, dump it without a trace of regret." Again, I'd say I'm pretty good at this and I do try to sell on things if I'm not using them.

I also strongly agree with Ruth's opinion on watching TV... I can be guilty of this!

"Every time we switch the TV on and sink into the sofa, we are also choosing not to do X, Y and Z. And this is fine. But acknowledge the choice and stop complaining about not having enough time."

One thing I've now done since reading this book is hire a cleaner. I'm struggling to keep up with everything and hummed and hawed about enlisting some help, but I've decided enough is enough and it will be worth the money to outsource this. There are more of my friends that have cleaners than I thought there would be too... it's just something that isn't talked about much, but when I started asking around I found that a few of them had hired help.

There are a few other things I want to work on, like holding onto grudges (they will be holding me back and preventing me from my GYST potential), stop watching the TV as much (see above!) and making sure that I do what I say I'm going to do.

I think the only point I'd disagree on is that Ruth doesn't like list making. I love a good list, and I personally find that a list helps keep me on track. I'd forget stuff if I didn't have it written down.

Anyway, all-in-all I enjoyed the book and if you're struggling to get your sh!t together and don't know where to start, then I'd highly recommend giving this book a read.

A few other books that I've got on my Kindle for reading next are 'Be Awesome - Modern Life for Modern Ladies' by Hadley Freeman and 'Happier at Home' by Gretchen Ruben.

{#ShareAdvent - Remembrance}

This time of year always makes me think of my mum.

I miss her every single day.

I bet there are bound to be a lot of us in a similar situation, missing family members or loved ones and it can be even harder at Christmas-time. So it seems fitting that one of the #ShareAdvent posts has been dedicated to this theme, Remembrance.

My eldest son is starting to understand a bit more about life and death as he gets older, and yet I still struggle to find the right words to explain what happened to my own mum.

I've had questions asking where my mummy lives, and when will she be back. It threw me at first, but I've now explained that my mummy was ill and she's not coming back.

I spoke to my son's nursery teachers about the situation, and they recommended a lovely book.

Word of warning, don't read it if you're feeling emotional. I was blubbing, big style!

"A little fox is in a big bad mood and is worried that its mother won't love it forever. In this beautiful and lyrical picture book, we see a clever and resourceful mother prove to her child that a parents love is limitless - no matter what."

{Smitten Saturday}

Ever since a little girl I have been smitten with Osborne books. I vividly remember pouring over The Osborne Book of Knowledge which I was given when I was 5 years old in 1987. I still have the book to this day. My son & I like to look at all the animals & then find them on the world map.

The only think I'm not a fan of is their gender specific books. Why does my little girl need to have stickers of fairies and ponies, whilst my little boy has cars and knights? At the moment my son would probably rather have the fairies as he's rather obsessed with purple, pink & Disney princesses.

I do love the sticker books though, and came across this Doll's House sticker book in Edinburgh (if memory serves me right I bought it in the Dragonfly Gifts shop on Broughton Street).

The illustrations are just gorgeous & I have to admit I didn't want to use it with the children for fear of ruining it!!

This morning we had a little shot and under my supervision (!!) we stuck some of the stickers in place. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I think my daughter did too.

What are you smitten with this week? (Apologies for the late posting of the linky, it's been a hectic week!)

{January Joy - 15th Jan}

Today's #JanuaryJoy prompt is to 'read a new book'.

Like my music, my reading material has always been a bit uninspired. Don't get me wrong, I do love to read, but over the past few years I've rarely had the time. I will admit that I read the 50 shades trilogy, and I'm currently trying to read a self-help book called 'Just Get On With It' however this book has been on my bedside table since February last year... progress is slow!!

I'm still to finish the other books that I purchased earlier last year and have ended up dipping in and out of them when I find a moment to myself. I did finish 'Why Men Love Bitches' and 'Act like a lady, think like a man' but I'm not sure that I actually learnt anything from them. One of the take home messages I can remember was that men cheat because they can with the main reason being that there are willing women out there.

Anyway, if I manage to get on a holiday this year, then hopefully I'll have time to put my feet up and finish a book. I have all these images in my head of me snuggled up by a fire, cup of tea glass of wine in hand engrossed in a good book (so much so that it's on my 35 at 35 list) but I've still not managed to actually do it.

So over to you, if I read one book this year, what should it be?

{Childhood Memories}

I thought I'd share with you a few of my favourite childhood books. I still have them and read them to my two little ones frequently. Hopefully they'll become their favourites too. They bring back many happy memories of spending quality time with my mum & dad when I was a little girl...

This was my all time favourite story... as you can see I've written my name in the top left hand corner!

I had a sookie (sp?) blanket when I was little...

Another Shirley Hughes favourite...

I loved all the Janet & Allan Ahlberg books, and still do. Peepo is another favourite.

Last but not least... Andy Pandy and the Willow Tree. I was desperate to have a willow tree in our garden when I was growing up!
