What's On - The Furniture Pop Up

On the 4th & 5th July, The Furniture Pop Up will be showcasing Scottish artisans and their wares at The Briggait, 141 Bridgegate, Glasgow. It's free for the public to attend.

Set up by Sarah Johnstone in 2014, who formally trained in furniture restoration, the idea grew from the disappointment at the quality of the end-of-year showcase at college for her and her fellow classmates.

‘The Furniture Pop Up’ idea has its philosophy firmly set on enabling makers, designers and artists to showcase their wares to consumers. With an expansion in to textile and fashion in 2015, Sarah formalised the company under one roof as Blue Tin Events.

Sarah Johnstone, Director and Founder of Blue Tin Events said:

‘I wanted to create a space for makers, designers and artists to showcase their products that is financially achievable for even the smallest of businesses - something that was previously lacking in Scotland as a whole.’

‘By bringing these Artisans together at one event, it makes it easy for consumers to buy local, quality and bespoke products for their homes.’

‘Inspired by my other half’s lack of vision, our Pop Up’s include room-by-room layouts with artisans displaying their products together and enabling customers to visualise the items more easily in their own homes.’

‘Our customers appreciate and desire the history, art form and quality of the products on offer and our events offer the opportunity to interact with the makers and designers of the items shown. Most importantly, it had to be a great day out and I do not believe in charging people to have a good time – which is why it is free for anyone to attend.’

‘The Briggait is six times the size of our first two venues, and we are so excited to have new faces on board, including food, produce and drink stalls as well as new makers, artists and designers. Our latest team member, interior and merchandising expert, Carla Jones Design will make the event a visual masterpiece for buyers looking for inspiration for their homes.’

We're Going Glamping

This weekend we are going glamping for our summer holidays. We are staying in Scotland at a gorgeous looking yurt and we can't wait. I'm hoping the weather improves somewhat as it's been raining today! I'm not packed yet, but hopefully it won't take long to get our stuff together... waterproofs, wellies, bikes, sun hats, sun cream... who knows what the weather will be like!! Best to prepare for all eventualities in Scotland and that's one of the benefits of travelling by car - plenty of space to ram it full of our belongings.

We were at the St Enoch Centre today to pick up a few bits and pieces (more on this in a separate post) and had lunch at Ed's Easy Diner. The diner has a specific gluten free menu which was ideal for me. I had a really yummy chicken salad, with a portion of fries. Shhhh... don't tell my PT!

So apologies as I'll probably be quiet on Twitter and the like for the next few days.

That said, I'd still love your support and votes for the Clickstay Mummy Blogger Awards where I could potentially win £1000 towards a villa in Portugal. Regular readers will know that I'm yet to take the kids abroad and I would love to go on an amazing holiday in the sun. If you liked my post 'My Tips for Travelling with Children' then I'd love you to vote for me here. It takes 2 seconds and you can vote once each day. The competition ends on 3rd July and at the moment I'm in third place. Please share, RT and like my statuses over on FB. I really, really appreciate it and will try and squash you into my suitcase if I win!!

I have a competition running to win a beauty hamper with House of Fraser, which you can enter here. Good luck!

If like me you've got to work during the holidays, you might be interested in Glasgow's first American style day camp, Camp Indy. Home & Interiors - Muji

When I was in London the other month we popped into Muji on the King's Road for a browse. This shop is right up my street and there were so many things that I would have loved to have brought home with me (unfortunately there just wasn't enough space in my suitcase).

I really like the idea of this aroma diffuser. You can scent your home with essential oils and it's safe for around children and pets as there are no naked flames (I've already had an accident with one of the kittens when the singed the end of their tail on one of my many candles...oops).

I also really like Muji acrylic storage drawers. I had one of these when I was a teenager that I stored my make-up in, and it did get pretty messy and scratched so it eventually went in the bin. However I quite fancy a few of these for my home office to store stationery.

Keeping with the office organisation, I also love these brown card magazine files. I did have white ones from Ikea for a while, but these are more aesthetically pleasing to me. I've got three shelves above my new Made.com desk that I still need to style and I think these would be ideal for storing important paperwork.

Lastly, I love Muji travel accessories. They just seem to have this market sussed and looks like they have everything and anything you could want for travel organisation. I have a hanging toiletries bag which is super handy (think mine is from Superdrug perhaps or maybe Sainsburys), but this box one at Muji looks even more ideal as it has more storage for dinky skincare bottles.

Do you own any items from Muji?
What else would you recommend I check out?

Weekly Wishes

// Fashion

I'm in desperate need of a new pair of slippers as both of my pairs have got holes in them (so much so that one pair has already gone into the bin!).

I love the mahabis slippers - the upper is grey (you can choose dark or light) and then you can pick a pair of colourful soles... I quite fancy the yellow ones.

// Hair & Beauty

My skin seems to have worsened again... rubbish :-(

I ran out of Merumaya Luxury Facial Wash and since then my skin has deteriorated, particularly my chin. So I'm putting it onto my shopping list! I quite fancy trying the Melting Cleansing Balm too.

// Home & Interiors

I have a cheap set of lightweight cutlery that I bought from Amazon as a transition for the kids from plastic cutlery to grown-up cutlery. However, with it being cheap has meant that it's now ready for the bin; they haven't lasted well at all. So I'm now on the lookout for a new collection. Rick & I both really liked the gold cutlery that we spotted at Zara Home in London recently, but I'm not sure gold is a good colour choice given that most of my interior is grey, including the dining room.

John Lewis have a black set (which are dishwasher friendly!) and cost £10 for 16 pieces. Perhaps this would be a good interim set until the kids are able to use heavier forks and knives. They certainly look better quality than the ones I currently have.

Review - Wagamama at Glasgow Fort

You might have noticed from my earlier competition with Glasgow Fort that there is a newly opened Wagamama restaurant at the retail park. I was invited along to review the eatery and I took Rick along with me, cos I'm nice like that ;-)

On arrival, the restaurant really does have that wow factor. It's an impressive building. I particularly like all the large glass windows that go right to the floor; there are also tables outside for when the summer finally lands in Glasgow. The interior has an industrial feel with polished concrete walls, exposed air handling pipework (is that what you call it?), and filament bulbs dotted about. I've only been to Wagamama a handful of times, and this is certainly the nicest one I've been to in terms of the look and feel of the restaurant.

It was Rick's first time experiencing Japanese fusion food at Wagamama, but he knew what he was going to order as my sister had recommended the Firecracker Chicken to him ahead of our visit. He does love his spicy food!

We chose two starters - pulled pork gyoza and a beef filled bun. For mains Rick chose the Firecracker Chicken and I had Teriyaki Chicken with rice. What I didn't realise was that the food would be brought out when it was ready, so Rick had his main first, then his starter. My starter arrived as Rick got his food... and then I had to wait 15-20 minutes for my main to arrive. So by the time my food got to the table, Rick had finished (he inhales his food!!). I've had a peek at the Wagamama website and they refer to the starters as sides, whereas on the menu at the restaurant I'm sure it referred to them as starters, which is perhaps a bit misleading.

We chose to visit the restaurant the week it had opened to the public (Day 2 to be precise). I think this was a mistake on our part as the service wasn't what I would have expected unfortunately. That said I can totally appreciate that there are members of staff new to Wagamama that will still be undergoing training and I do think it's fantastic that the restaurant has brought 40 new jobs to the retail park.

The food was lovely, presented beautifully on a range of gorgeous platters and bowls. I'll certainly go back in the future.

Firecracker Chicken

Korean Barbecue Beef & Red Onion Hirata Steamed Bun

Pulled Pork Steamed Gyoza

Teriyaki Chicken Donburi (steamed rice stir-fried with chicken and mixed vegetables served with a pickled side)

Free green tea? Don't mind if I do!

As I was leaving I asked to see the children's menu and I was pleasantly surprised. We've been to restaurants before where the children's options are chicken nuggets and pizza regardless of the type of food on the adult menu. I liked that at Wagamama the kids have the choice of mini Japanese dishes... ramen, noodles and katsu curry amongst others... giving them an introduction to Japanese food.

We received £30 towards our dinner at Wagamama Glasgow Fort in exchange for this review. As always, opinions are my own and are honest.

Eating Out - Food Story, Aberdeen

I drove up to Aberdeen on Friday to visit my gran as she had been feeling a bit poorly. She's 92 years old (and most certainly doesn't look her age) and I do wish I was a bit closer so that I could visit more often than I do. Anyway, I was staying with my sister for the night and on Saturday morning she took me along to The Foodstory Cafe on Thistle Street for breakfast; despite it being open since 2013 I was yet to visit.

It was amazing and I will most certainly be back!!!

Firstly I love the concept of the cafe and the ethos behind the brand. The cafe itself has been built using recycled materials - the interior is right up my street; lots of fairy lights, reclaimed wood, concrete and grey paint.

All the tables and chairs are quirky; I especially like the bench... oh and the fairy lights!
Did I tell you how much I love fairy lights!?

And then there's the food. It has to be said that it was the best breakfast I've had in a while. I chose the rye toast with avocado and it was served with fresh tomato salsa and basil leaves. I let Ali have a bite and she had proper food envy! She had chosen the House Porridge (although I don't think she realised it was served with raisins, which she doesn't like, so these were promptly removed - after I had taken a photo of course!).

My rye toast with avocado
Alison's House Porridge
There were plenty gluten free options available too and the raw vegan blueberry cheesecake which was gluten, dairy and sugar free looked delish!

Yummy!!
Next time I'm up, this is where I'll be headed for lunch as Ali tells me the salads are to die for.

Fashion - Baukjen

Baukjen is one of my favourite brands for stylish but comfortable workwear. I had a few Isabella Oliver maternity dresses, and then discovered Isabella Oliver 365, now Baukjen, after the kiddies were born. If you haven't already heard of them, then I suggest you check out their website right now. Don't blame me if you get a bit carried away, especially given they have 20% off plus free delivery and returns right now!

I thought I'd share with you some of my favourite pieces from their website...

Sinclair Jersey Dress in Dark Grey Melange at Baukjen

Darton Jersey Dress in Caviar Black at Baukjen

Elisa Jersey Jumpsuit in Caviar Black at Baukjen

I also love the Liv Leather Leggings, but at £339 they are very pricey and I'm not sure I could pull them off anyway!

My Tips for Travelling with Children

I travelled a lot as a youngster. Kudos to my parents as it can't have been easy! By the age of 10 I had surfed on a boogie board in Phuket, had been shopping in Hong Kong and even attended school in a foreign country.

At the national museum in Oman

Feeding the elephants in Thailand

I have been extremely lucky to experience lots of different cultures and hope that I'm able to provide the same opportunities for my children. Although so far we have only holidayed in Scotland! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we manage a holiday abroad this year and I've been giving thought to some travel tips.

// Planning your trip

With smaller children it's all about the activities and the accommodation; the country doesn't matter so much. My recommendation would be to go for as large an apartment that you can afford. The more space you have the easier it will be; especially if the kids will be going to bed early it might be nice to have a separate bedroom or lounge for the grown-ups so you can have some time to yourselves ;)

When booking flights give plenty of consideration to the flight times. It might seem reasonable to wake the family up at 2am to save a tenner on flights but is it really worth it in the long run? Also make sure that you factor in plenty of time for any transfers as everything seems to take a million times longer with little kids.. the second the kids know you're in a rush they'll need to go to the toilet!

If you're going abroad, check passports and make sure they are still valid. I had to get an emergency passport the day before travelling to Thailand a few years back as I didn't have enough validity left on it and it was really stressful to say the least!

// Packing

I think getting the kids involved in the packing can help. My daughter especially likes to help choose her clothes for whilst she's away and it avoids any holiday tantrums when she selected the outfits herself in advance (yes, she is only 4 years old!!). Despite the fact we're yet to go abroad I invested in little suitcases for the kids so they can be (partly) responsible for their own packing and I think they like to be involved in the process of getting ready for a holiday.

Be organised with sun cream, hats etc and take a small first aid kit. Also take some antibacterial hand washing stuff, it's fab for when travelling. It's important not to forget medication for family members. It's easy to get hold of a new toothbrush when in a foreign country but not so easy to get hold of prescription medication if you forget that!

// The Journey

When it comes to the journey, buy and wrap a small present for the plane/car in advance of the trip or a few little presents if you're on a long haul flight. This doesn't have to be something costly; think sticker books and pocket money toys from the pound shop. You could perhaps pack a special travel rucksack that your wee one could pack with their special teddy or blanket along with some new bits and pieces. My advice would be to not get anything noisy as this will disrupt other passengers or the car driver.

Take plenty snacks for the journey and my advice would be to steer clear of too many sweets. My littlest loves popcorn and rice cakes both of which are preferable to jelly beans and chocolate! For car journeys when I'm on my own with the kids I pack them each a lunch box of heathy snacks that they can open themselves (making sure there is no fiddly packaging or Tupperware boxes that they can't get into!) and in between them in the back seat I plonk a box of toys that they picked themselves for the trip.

// The Holiday

Start a travel journal... My mum encouraged my sister and I to start a travel journal when we moved to the Middle East and I'm so grateful she did as its a fantastic keepsake for us to look back on. On our first long haul flight we had our A4 book with us and we wrote & drew in this with details of our flight and what we had to eat. It also kept us occupied during our holidays as we collected ticket stubs, menus etc to record our adventures.

I dug my travel journal out of the loft to show you some of my entries!

I would absolutely love for you to vote for me in the Clickstay Mummy Blogger Awards. It takes 2 seconds and you can vote here up to once daily. I'm currently in third place, but I would be over the moon if I made it into the top spot as the prize is £1000 towards a villa in Portugal which would allow me to go with the kids on our first family holiday in the sun. Thanks so much for your ongoing support - it's much appreciated. Sarah x

When I was growing up I had a box collection (I know it seems a bit bizarre, but it's true! I even brought some of them into my old work for a laugh and they thought I was insane!!). Each country or city we visited I was allowed to pick a small ornamental box. I still have a lot of the boxes to this day and they are lovely memories of my family holidays. I also had a postcard collection. You could start a collection of your own and make it a new family tradition; let the kiddies pick a tacky souvenir or a fridge magnet as a holiday souvenir and each place you visit you can build on your collection.

// Homeward Bound

Once you get home, why not find a world map poster and start putting pins in the countries you've visited. Again, this is something that our mum encouraged us to do and it helped my geography. Not that you'd know it now; during a game of Articulate a few years back I was frantically trying to describe Buenos Aires as a South American airline...oops!!

This post is my entry into the Clickstay "10 Top Tips For Travelling with Children" competition.

You can vote for Glasgow Mummy here... many thanks for your support.
