{Review & Guest Post: Olive Dragonfly hits the spa!}

I sent Bex from The Olive Dragonfly along for a Marriott Pamper Day. Here is her review...
On Thursday last week I was very lucky to be invited along to try out a Pamper Day experience at the Marriott hotel in Glasgow on behalf of Sarah who couldn't manage a week day.
I'm very happy to be able to write a guest post for Sarah reviewing the experience on her fabulous pink pages. I was a guest of Experience Days in return for an honest review.
They posted me out a voucher which came in lovely black packaging with all the information inside.
"A Marriott Pamper Day is not just about exploring a new place, it is about discovering a new state of mind. Health and beauty treatments will help you do just that as you relax and unwind in the hands of trained professionals. Let  your skin breath, let your muscles unwind and enjoy being inside some of the beautiful venues Marriott strives to provide. This wonderful pamper experience is available at selected Marriott Hotels & Resorts and the treatments are carried out by professional therapists using top quality salon products such as Decleor Carita and Espa. A 'Must-Do' experience that is about much more than world class beauty treatments."
As part of the spa day experience I was given access to the Marriott facilities including gym, pool, sauna and steam room as well as a choice of three treatments in the Distinction Spa. If you read my blog, you may remember I recently visited the Distinction spa in Clarkston with a voucher from my husband for my birthday and had a brilliant time so I was really looking forward to this! I chose the relaxing back, neck and shoulder massage and the refreshing facial.
I was really looking forward to a swim and relaxing in the steam room and sauna before my treatments (as I didn't want to wash off any nice oils/moisturisers after). I took my kindle to spend some time relaxing after the treatments as I was going alone (everyone else was working during the week or I would have taken a friend along as it is designed for two with one treatment each).
My treatments were booked for 11am but I arrived at 9:45am to take advantage of the facilities. I took the car so I wouldn't have to walk through town all oily after my treatments and was able to register it at the Leisure Club desk so I wouldn't have to pay to park. Unfortunately I was told it was for 3 hours which would only give me 30 minutes to relax after my treatments before having to go and get a pay and display ticket.
I was shown round and given a towel and robe and headed to the pool. I had the whole pool to myself so took advantage and swam laps as the pool is shorter than my local council pool. The steam room was lovely with relaxing coloured lights and I had a quick 5 minutes in the sauna (as much as I can usually stand!) before I had to shower and get ready for my treatments. The showers were nice with lockable doors so you could have a proper wash without your costume on.

I think the pool area could do with some freshening up to be honest, it didn't look like the picture above, there were no cushions on the water stained wooden chairs and I don't remember seeing any plants either. I didn't feel like I was able to "enjoy being inside some of the beautiful venues Marriott strives to provide" as stated on the Experience Days website. Sadly the Glasgow venue could do with a little refurbishment and a lick of paint, it wasn't what I expected after reading about "the luxury and quality of the world famous Marriott venues" and I didn't fancy sitting there to relax after my treatments.  Unfotunately I can't share any up to date photos with you as you're not allowed to take photos in the pool area for privacy reasons.

Between the changing rooms and the spa, I had to walk along a carpeted corridor and upstairs past lots of bare windows looking out to the car park and nearby building works in my robe and barefoot as no slippers were provided and I didn't want to wear my boots (they said towels and robes were provided and I didn't consider footwear, I'd definitely recommend taking some flip flops).

The spa was nicely decorated in bright pink and black and I was given a nice cold cup of water and taken into a treatment room to get ready for my massage. My therapist asked how much pressure I would like and proceeded with the back massage first, concentrating on my shoulders as that's where I carry most of my tension. The massage was lovely and very beneficial. I then turned over for my facial which started off well but in between each application of face product, what I thought was a very rough cloth was used to remove them. I initially thought it was instead of exfoliator but then actual exfoliator was used which was much more gentle. I had said my skin was a little sensitive but after a few wipes with what turned out to be sponges (I saw them at the end, see here for similar texture) it was starting to feel a bit sore. Unfortunately it is still sore even now, a few hours later, when I touch it, although it is very soft! It was a real shame as I love facials and usually find them ultra-relaxing but I have to say I didn't enjoy this one. I experienced one of the best facials ever at the other Distinction spa so it was very disappointing here.
After my treatments, given there were only two treatment rooms and a reception in the small spa with nowhere to sit and relax I just went back to the changing rooms (which was a freezing cold jog back down the corridor after being all cosy) and decided to go home as the chairs in the pool area didn't look very comfortable.  I'd noticed on the signs by the pool that there was a baby swimming group due in at 1.30pm which I wouldn't find particularly relaxing either.  It also meant I didn't have to worry about the car parking.
As a result I have to say I wouldn't choose to experience a spa day here. I've loved spa days in hotels where you can relax all day and stay cosy in the spa area with comfy lounge chairs or chaise lounges to sit on with magazines and water available. These places do tend to be more pricey though and for £75 (usually £89) it's a pretty good deal, I just wouldn't recommend this particular venue. I would recommend the spa for a massage and everyone was very friendly and helpful.
If they were to give the place a little revamp and maybe put some blinds up on the windows between the spa and changing rooms and provide slippers it would be a much more enjoyable experience. I'm still not sure I would spend a whole day there though as there appeared to be nowhere to eat other than a few tables and a vending machine by the main Leisure Club. Again, I've only ever been to spas with facilities for afternoon tea, snacks or drinks within the spa and they are definitely missing a trick here. I would have definitely stayed longer and bought a drink and probably lunch if available and there was somewhere nice to sit and relax after my treatments.
Overall I enjoyed a swim, steam and a bit of pampering at the Marriott and would return for a spa treatment for a treat if I was in town. I'd like to thank Experience Days for the opportunity to sample what the Marriott had to offer.

{Wobbles Wednesday}

Joining in again this week with Kate's Wobbles Wednesday blog hop

Last week I lost 1 lb, and this week I was neither up nor down. I guess no weight loss is better than a weight gain. If I'm honest, after the blow out I had this weekend I'm pleasantly surprised that I didn't gain a pound or two!

Here's a rundown of what I ate (Friday night through to Sunday night). I'm hoping listing it here will mean I will never do it again!!
  • One (large) bag of Percy Pig sweets
  • Handful of wine gums
  • Porridge, fresh orange & cup of tea (at least there was one healthy meal!)
  • Club sandwich & skinny fries
  • Three course dinner at a wedding
  • Hog roast roll with stuffing and apple sauce (wedding buffet)
  • At least 3 or 4 gin & tonics (slimline!)
  • 3 glasses of fizz
  • Two glasses of wine
  • A full Scottish breakfast including black pudding, bacon, sausage...
  • Three slices white toast with jam
  • Danish pastry
  • Lots of cups of tea
  • Prawn cocktail baguette with crisps
  • Pre-packed watermelon fruit salad
  • 2 white Magnums (yes, two!)
  • At least 6 mini chocolate muffins, might have been 8!!!
  • Another glass of fizz (at wedding #2)
  • Fish & chips (second wedding buffet)

I'm rather disgusted with myself!! What also didn't help is that on Monday night I had Glasgow Baking Club and I consumed a tonne of cake, followed by round 2 at work on Tuesday. Even today I ate a small slice of chocolate cake... Really struggling to get out of bad habits cake-wise.

What I am proud of is that this month I have run a grand total of 56.3 miles over 15 outings. I'm guessing that the running is helping improve my metabolism?

I think that My Fitness Pal is definitely making me more aware of what I'm eating, which can only be a good thing. I just need to try and limit my snacks. I'm always fine at breakfast... eating porridge or muesli with fruit and a cup of tea but by mid-afternoon (sometimes even mid-morning!) I'm reaching for a biscuit.

What I have done is visit the supermarket and buy a few little nut, raisin, rice cake snack packs. They're not low calorie, but it's surely better for me to munch on some of those instead of cake & biscuits. This means that at work I have a drawer of healthy-ish snacks that I can choose from. I also have slim-a-soups, a few tins of fruit and some porridge sachets at my desk. It definitely helps to bring in my own lunch rather than visit the canteen where there is even more temptation to buy unhealthy foods.

Right... that's my update for this week. Do pop on over to Kate's post and visit the other blogs that are taking part. Let's see how this week goes!

{Recipe: Rhubarb Crumble Cake}

The theme for yesterday's Glasgow Baking Club meeting was 'Scottish'. Being a bit slow with my response, a lot of the obvious cakes and bakes (shortbread, Dundee cake, carrot cake, oatie biscuits...) were already taken and I had a slight panic over what to make!

After some googling, I decided upon a Rhubarb Crumble cake, and here is the recipe:

{Ingredients}

250 g unsalted butter, softened
250 g golden caster sugar, plus 1 tbsp for the crumble topping
2 tsp vanilla extract
5 large eggs
300 g plain flour, plus 7 tbsp for the crumble topping
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
300 g rhubarb, washed, trimmed & finely sliced

{Method}

Heat oven to 160 deg C / 140 deg C (fan) / gas 3.

Grease and line the base and sides of a deep 20 cm round cake tin.

Preparing the ingredients

Beat the butter, 250 g sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.

I used my Kitchen Aid stand mixer

Incorporate the eggs into the mixture one at a time.

Fold in 300 g flour and baking powder.

Spoon out 85 g of the batter and to this add the extra 7 tbsp flour and cinnamon. Mix with a cutlery knife until it becomes crumbly.

Fold the rhubarb into the rest of the cake batter and scrape into the prepared tin.

Scatter over the crumble mix and 1 tbsp sugar.

Prior to baking

Bake for 1 hr 15 min, until a skewer poked in comes out clean.

If the cake looks like it's browning too much on the top, lay a sheet of foil over the top.

Cool for 15 min in the tin and finish cooling on a wire rack.

On display at Felix & Oscar cafe, Great Western Road for Glasgow Baking Club

The cake is lovely served with cream - yummy!!

{Sunday roundup, on a Monday!}

I've had a very busy weekend, and so apologies for the delayed Sunday Roundup...

I'm back on the healthy eating, or at least I was until Friday! I lost 1 lb last week, and I'm dreading my weigh in on Wednesday after my indulgent weekend!

Despite the name Forever 21, I bought a few items from the new Glasgow store including the sandals below. 31 is not too old for Forever 21, right?

The sun was in Glasgow - yippee!!

I received some lovely #PostCircle mail from Whimsical Online. I really need to spend some time this week and reciprocate with my fellow grey seals :-)

The kiddies and I had great fun decorating our front garden in the sun... chalk everywhere :-)

The weekend was filled with weddings.... I had an all day invite for a wedding in North Berwick on Saturday. They had glorious weather and it was such a great couple of days. I wore a Karen Millen dress.

The view from the balcony.

Sunday morning was spent relaxing in the hotel spa... sauna, steam room, outdoor jacuzzi... bliss!

We played a round of putting on Sunday afternoon before a late lunch. I lost :-(

Then on Sunday it was off to another wedding, this time just an evening reception invitation. This wedding was near Dollar and I wore a sequin black dress and curled my hair.

I'm currently making a Rhubarb Crumble cake for Glasgow Baking Club this evening.

Check out my professional apron, courtesy of my dad's wife Jo (of quilt fame)

Early night for me tonight!!

{Smitten Saturday: Foxes}

Glasgow Mummy

This week I am smitten with all things foxy!

My favourite animal is actually elephants (or maybe owls), but I'm rather smitten with a number of fox-inspired items at the minute... as you'll see from my Pinterest feed.

At Christmas I purchased a crystal fox ring for myself and my son has been calling his lower bunk bed his 'den' and it got me thinking that foxes would make a good theme for a child's bedroom. The more I started googling, the more foxy items I found that I just loved!!

And with all the googling for items for a little one's bedroom, I stumbled across a few things that I would love for me too....!!

{Wobbles Wednesday}

I'm joining up with The Naked Mum's Wobbles Wednesday blog hop for the first time today.

My weight has been slowly creeping up and up and I'm really disappointed in myself for letting this happen as I had done so well to lose the weight in the first place. I went from 13 stone 10 lbs down to 10 stone 4 lbs in 2011 with a combination of running, weights (light ones!) and healthy eating. You can see my before and after pics here.

This winter has dragged on and on - the horrible weather and dark nights didn't help with my running efforts... however, despite stopping exercising as much I continued to eat loads and loads... hence the weight gain! The other month I was sitting at 11 stone 11 lbs.... 1.5 stone over what I was before.

My sister has given me some motivation to get back into the running and it's been going really well. It's the 22nd of May right now and according to my Nike running app I have run 46.1 miles this month!!

My weight is slowing coming back down and this morning I weighed in at 11 stone 4lbs. Ideally I'd like to lose another 7lbs and I'll be happy. But progress is soooo slow and I love my food far too much!!

Perth Mummy and I are using My Fitness Pal - we're doing weekly weigh ins on a Wednesday and I'm being honest with my food diary... it seems to be working thus far.

This weekend I have two weddings to go to and I know my weight is just going to go up again. I'm going to stick to gin & slim line rather than wine and I will try my best to stay away from the buffet table when I have the late night drunken munchies!! I have bought some new spanx-style pants to suck in my flabby tummy... they work a treat!!

{Gardening}

Are we ever going to get a summer, I ask??

Hanging basket inspiration from Pinterest

Anyway, I decided to get a few plants to brighten up my garden. I'm being savvy here and purchased a few terracotta style pots at £2 each (bargain!) from Dobbies... and the bonus is that they can come with me when I move house.

I love my garden and will really miss it. It still needs work and is a bit bare in parts, but there isn't much point continuing with it now as I won't benefit from any investment due to the house move (which will hopefully be soon!).

Last week I joined Dobbie's Garden Club. You may think that this is really sad, but I have to say I'm really pleased I did. My sister and I each got a free tea and I got a 10% discount on the plants I purchased. I've already nearly recouped the price of the membership itself. What's not to like?

Littlest looking tired

I filled my car boot with brightly coloured plants and we headed home to pot them all. Ali ended up doing most of the gardening as the kiddies were being hard work at the time - sorry Ali! We created two hanging baskets for the front door and I'll take a photo once they're in bloom. We also potted two Pericallis - one a deep blue that my son chose and the other a magenta colour for my daughter. As plants go I think they were great value and have made a real impact. Each plant was £4 and the pot was £2.

The back of my car...

A plant for each of the little ones, plus a lavender for me - smell is amazing

For the hanging baskets we potted:
  • Hot pink trailing Petunia,
  • Pink Geranium,
  • Deep rose Gypsophilia,
  • Soft pink Geranium, and
  • Pink trailing Centradenia.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they work out ok (I tend to kill most plants, not on purpose of course!). It was Ailsa over at Perth Mummy that inspired me with the hanging baskets. I thought she was mental when she made hers as they looked rubbish initially but they turned out really well.

How many of you have green fingers?

PS I've just discovered a very cute blog called 'Little Green Fingers' and Dawn has some lovely ideas for things to encourage your children to enjoy gardening.

{Sunday Roundup}

An uber quick Sunday Roundup for you all... I'm just back from seeing Gosford Park at Pollok House as part of the Southside Film Festival, and have to be up early in the morning for work! It was an excellent evening... a pre-film drink in the library at Pollok House, followed by the screening of Gosford Park in one of the grand rooms upstairs in the house after which we were whisked downstairs into the staff quarters for a 2 course dinner with wine... all for just £25 per person. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Anyway, here's my pics from this week:

I tried out a new hairstyle... :-)

My sister arrived on Tuesday - we had a wee drink at The Bungo on Tuesday night

Lunch on Wednesday at Naked Soup followed by a browse round the shops

Lots of laughter in the garden - making the most of the sun!

I became a member of Dobbie's Gardening Club and we potted some hanging baskets for the house!

Ali & I watched this movie. I was scared.... she was not!

Chilling in the garden.

Eldest loving the sun lounger!

We made a Victoria Sponge with cream, raspberries and jam!

My daughter's first commission... a canvas for Auntie Ali & Uncle Chris' house

How was your week?

{Smitten Saturday - Quilt}

Glasgow Mummy

This week I am smitten with the quilt that my dad's wife Jo hand made... it's beautiful. I'm delighted that she decided to gift it to me as I love it & it is perfect colour-wise for my bedroom.

The spotty reverse

The floral stitching around the edges

The centre sunrise block

The leaf detailing
