{35 at 35: An Amazing Birthday Cake, Check!}

Last weekend was my daughter's first birthday. With the help of Mrs Jones, I managed to make her an amazing birthday cake, another item I can successfully tick off my 35 at 35 list. The theme was 'afternoon tea' and I had thought I would have bunting, bows or buttons as my design for the cake.

We ended up choosing buttons, and I'm so happy with the end result. It took a wee while... from 10am until 4pm... but by the end of the day I had the most amazing cake to take home with me. I'm so proud of myself!

I don't know what's happened to the camera on my iPhone, but there seems to have been an issue uploading the photos to the computer, so apologies for the picture quality, but you get the idea! There will be more photographs from the actual party as soon as I can get them organised!

I'd highly recommend Mrs Jones as a teacher if anyone in Glasgow is looking to go on any baking courses! I quite fancy the Retro Chic Cupcakes course...

Totally agree... perhaps with a cup of tea too!

{Fabulous Finds: Activities for Little People}

Glasgow Mummy

Here is another of my Fabulous Finds posts, this time on activities and games for the little ones - all ideas that I came across on Pinterest. I'm stuck in the house today waiting for a delivery, so I'm thinking of doing some food stamping, and if the weather is ok then I might do a scavenger hunt in the garden (we found a snail last weekend as well as a few wiggly worms!) and I will definitely try the supermarket bingo next time I do my food shop! I try my best to be organised and do food shopping online, but I'm not in a routine yet and invariably have to make a trip to the shops with the kiddies in tow most weeks which can be testing at times. This game might keep the toddler amused!

Ten pin bowling with bottles filled with coloured liquids. For even more fun, add glow sticks for night-time bowling!

I Spy / Scavenger hunt!

Rainbow rice - like sand but less messy!

Fairy houses out of milk cartons!

Paper plate stencils for painting!

Help me shop! Supermarket bingo game for kiddies!

Food stamping with celery!

As always, do let me know what you think. What activities do you do with your little ones?

{Home Inspiration}

Photobucket

I'm starting to run out of home projects for Cat's Making It Home linky as I've already posted about my garden, my dining room and my kitchen. This week, I thought I'd share a few items that I love that I've 'stuck' to my pinboards in Pinterest. I'm a major fan of grey at the moment, and last year I posted some inspiration photographs from Pinterest here. I'd love for my house to look like these pics!

Anyway, here are the home accessories and pieces of furniture that I'm loving right now. Perhaps one day I'll be able to buy some of them and continue my home transformation....

{Result... Half Marathon - Done!}

I took part in the Edinburgh Half Marathon on Sunday, as many of you will already know from either reading my blog or following me on Twitter.

I was rather nervous - it was my first ever race!

I was totally disorganised, which I have to say is not like me at all. Literally a few days before the race I managed to finalise my travel arrangements! I think it had been adding to the stress, because once that was sorted I did feel a bit more confident about it all.

My running number hadn't arrived in the post though, so I had the added hassle of having to collect it in person in Edinburgh the day before.

So on Saturday afternoon I dropped the children with my in-laws and headed off on the train for Edinburgh. My lovely neighbours were kind enough to let me borrow their daughter's student flat for the night, which just happened to be empty at the time. The location was ideal - just a 5 min walk from the start of the race.

The night before I laid out all my running gear, just like you would before the first day back at school!

In the morning I was awake super early (5am!!)... this time it wasn't because of the children, it was my nerves! I was paranoid that I was going to sleep in! I also needed to be up early so that I could have my breakfast and then have plenty of time for the food to settle before the race started at 8am. So at 6am I was sat having porridge and a banana, in my running gear and all set to go!

Here I am at the race start... (yes, I'm wearing make-up but I was having my photograph taken for Macmillan Cancer Support so I wanted to look good!)

Thankfully on Sunday the weather was a little cooler, in the morning at least. I was a bit chilly at 7.30am waiting for the race to start! There was such an atmosphere, and even writing about it now it brings a smile to my face. The radio DJ was shouting out motivating messages, the music was blaring and everyone was lined up ready to go... then the race started! I was running alone as my sister had injured her ankle, but I just plugged in my music and off I went.

I ran a consistent 10 minute mile. I was using a Nike+ GPS app on my iPhone and it told me my pace every 0.5 miles, so I knew if I was going too fast or too slow. I didn't want to overdo it in the heat (by 9am it was getting hot!) and so I just kept a steady pace and kept on running!

At each Macmillan cheer point I passed my name was shouted and it encouraged me to keep going. What a buzz!!

At around 12 miles I saw a young-ish guy collapse and someone was putting him in the recovery position. I'm guessing he collapsed because of the heat and that he hadn't been taking enough fluids. I personally don't know how the marathon runners managed, as their race started at 10am when it was even hotter! I drank a lot of Lucozade Sport on Saturday (thanks @ScumMum for the constant reminders to drink!) and during the race on Sunday and I actually managed ok. I have to say, it wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I completed the race in 2 hours and 12 minutes - I'm pretty chuffed with that.

I picked up the pace at the end and I ran through the finish line with a massive smile on my face.

...and here I am at the end with my medal! (Hair & make-up still in place!!)

At the moment, the total amount we've raised for Macmillan Cancer Support is £4,323. Thank you to everyone for your support and donations - I couldn't have done it without you.

{Half Marathon}

Tomorrow I will be running (jogging!) in my first ever race... the Edinburgh Half Marathon. My sister, her work colleague & I have been raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and to date we have raised over £4000. I am delighted!! I know my mum would be so proud of us.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me... the race starts at 8am tomorrow morning. Eek!

{Bamarang & Reader Offer}

The lovely people over at Bamarang.co.uk have recently been in contact with me regarding their website and have given me a special offer for the readers of my blog... yay!

Bamarang was established at the start of this year and it is a design site with a difference. The team of scouts, based in Shoreditch, London, scour the UK for new and inspiring items and bring exclusive discounts to their customers for limited time periods. You need to join the site, but it's free to become a member. They've got gadgets, accessories, homeware and they also have a special kids sale on at the moment. Anyway, I thought I would share the details as there were a few items that caught my eye...

I think my toddler would love the Rock n Roll red wooden guitar by Vilac...

And for me, I think the Tipsy Glasses by Loris & Livia, which are £55 for a set of six, are seriously cool.

I've also spotted that Flux Chairs will be joining the other sale items tomorrow. I spotted them in a local interior design shop a wee while ago and thought they looked very funky. It's one piece of polypropylene and it arrives flatpack, looking like an envelope, and it has notches in it so you fold it into a chair shape. Genius!

If you click here, then you will be taken to a special offer for £10 off your first purchase. Enjoy! Do let me know if you buy anything...

{Savvy Shopping}

Savvy Online Shoppers Friday started over on Kate on Thin Ice’s blog where she encourages you to check out an easy way to ensure that money goes to charity when you shop online at no extra cost to you. Read more here http://kateonthinice.wordpress.com/2012/05/17/what-support-does-tommys-offer-to-parents-and-parents-to-be-how-can-you-get-involved/

Here are Kate's questions for week #1 of Savvy Online Shoppers...

1. How often do you shop online?
Very frequently! I'd say at least once a week.
2. If you can remember, tell us about the first time you shopped online?
Baby brain... can't remember a thing! It was possibly an eBay purchase? I do remember thinking it wasn't safe to make big purchases online, so I only ever bought things that were up to £10 in value or thereabouts. I now would happily make bigger purchases online (and frequently do!).
3. What do you buy regularly online?
Groceries, clothes, baby bits & pieces, craft supplies, gifts...
4. What other type of products or services do you buy online? (flowers, gifts, holidays, insurance etc)
Insurance, flowers, holidays, food gifts, homeware...
5. What are the advantages of shopping online?
Easy, fast and the big plus - I don't need to trail the shops with the kids in tow!
6. Are there any disadvantages of shopping online?
Sometimes I prefer to actually see before I buy, and occasionally I don't want to wait for an item to be delivered, but more often than not I buy online. Sometimes it can be a pain having to return items if they are damaged or don't fit, but thankfully I've not had too many problems with online shopping.
7. Do you ever shop online in secret?
All the time!
8. What is the very last thing you bought online?
I had a splurge yesterday and bought a load of new clothing for myself (shhh!).
9. If someone was buying something online for you, what would you like it to be if money was no object?
Wow... I think it would have to be a designer handbag. Maybe the Mulberry Oversized Travel Bag, in Oak Shiny Lambskin at £1,250? This would also allow me to check off one of my 35 and 35 list items (number 16 to be precise!).

10. Have you heard of Give As You Live? If not find out more here http://www.give.as/kateonthinice where a video will show you all about it.

Yes, I have. For my readers that haven't, please do check out the link above.

{Groovy Mum's Update}

My Button

Yep, that's right... I'm getting my groove back with Kate on Thin Ice (trying to be more positive!).

Here are the challenges this week:

1. Body – Best Foot Forward
How are your feet?  Would you happily publish a photo of them on your blog or could they do with a little care and attention?  What could you do to treat your feet this week?
I ran 11 miles last week... yes, eleven!!! I just wanted to share that fact with you all as I'm so proud of myself. I'm on track for the half marathon, which is in a week - yikes!
Yes, I'd happily post a photograph of my feet... I bought myself a new pair of wedge sandals online yesterday so perhaps I will post a photograph of me wearing them when they arrive!

2. Mind – New Words
I want you to find 3 new words this week and hopefully ones that mean something to you.
I will keep my eyes and ears open for some new words... watch this space.
3. Spirit – I always struggle to come up with a challenge for this one so if anyone has any ideas on how to move this one forwards, let me know.
I always find the Spirit challenges difficult, so no inspiration here - sorry. Could possibly make the change from 'Spirit' to 'Inspire' and the Groovy Mums could share quotes, words, photographs, achievements etc?
4. Blogging – I am inviting you to get behind my new blog hop type thing which will take place on Fridays.  It is called Savvy Online Shoppers (SOS)  It is all about celebrating the things we buy online from the mundane to presents to the spectacular.   Come back here on Friday and find out more.
I do love to shop (as you all know!)... will definitely check out Savvy Online Shoppers - yay!
5. Charity Connections – It is #charitytuesday so BritMums are asking people to blog about their charity shop finds and experiences.  If you write a blog, tweet @BritMums to let them know and they will promote the post for you to their thousands of followers.
I also urge you to read these two posts and to take action.  I am really disappointed at the numbers signing up to my #mums4good campaign so any help will be appreciated. Do click on the #mums4good on the sidebar and find out more.  Discovering what it is all about will only take a few minutes of your time .
6. Special Days – Think about an important day for you that is coming up.  It might be a birthday, an anniversary, a day off from work/home or a holiday.  Commit now to making it really special for YOU.  How will you do that?
I am going to take a day off work at the end of May (I hope - not asked the boss yet!) to make up for the extra day I worked today. I will be taking a day off when the children are at nursery, and I am going to give myself permission to be selfish and I plan to relax - maybe treat myself to lunch in a cafe, or perhaps a massage! This day off will also be post-half marathon, so even more of a reason to relax!
7. Twitter Party – All mums and mum-friendly employers and businesses are invited to the #groovywork Twitter party tomorrow Wednesday 16th May from7-8pm.  If you have never attended a Twitter party before, fear now.  Just be on Twitter between 7pm and 8pm (you don’t have to be there all the time) and use hashtag #groovywork as we chat about all things work-related for mums.
Sorry, I missed the party - not sure how I managed that... oops.

{Eat Pray Love}

This is a post for the Tots100 Book Club, where bloggers share their favourite stories.

I recently finished the book Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. It's the first book that I've read in a long while. I guess I'm so busy these days, that by the evening all I want to do is sleep (especially knowing that it's likely my sleep will be disrupted thanks to the little ones!).

The synopsis for the story goes like this "Elizabeth Gilbert is in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, and they're trying for a baby - she doesn't want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance."

I purchased the book at the start of the year, with the notion of 'new year, new me' in mind (yes, it has taken me 4 months to finish the book!). I was drawn to the idea of self-discovery and having seen the movie I knew that Elizabeth found her happiness in the end. I have been going through a difficult few months (as you can tell from the rest of my reading list) and I found Eat Pray Love to be uplifting and inspirational. I'm keen to get my holiday alone booked, as part of my 35 at 35 list, but unlike Elizabeth I'll have a just a week whereas she had a year of travels.

I've been a bit slow on the uptake, I think it was 2006 that this book was a big hit, and I here I am in 2012 just getting around to reading it. Anyway, I'm happy that I have finally read the novel and I think I probably will read it again (maybe on my holiday!). I knew the outcome, but despite this I still enjoyed the book. Here's hoping I can find my happy ending...

{Fabulous Finds: Father's Day}

It's Father's Day on the 17th June this year. Here is my round up of some gift ideas for the daddies out there as part of my Fabulous Finds series.

For those of you local to Glasgow, you can have a child's handprint put onto a mug, plate etc at Rouken Glen Park. I've previously purchased mugs and heart shaped plates with both kids handprints on as Christmas gifts for family members, but equally these would make a very cute and thoughtful Father's Day gift.

Another thoughtful gift that I've previously purchased are personalised cufflinks. How cute are these!

Personalised Cufflinks, Notonthehighstreet.com

I have also previously gifted a personalised plectrum with the words 'Dad You Rock!' on it. Perfect for music lovers.

Personalised Guitar Pick by Divinestampings on etsy

Why not check out these amazing miniature architectural models of iconic buildings by Chisel and Mouse, including a few from Glasgow, such as the School of Art below. Ideal for dad's who are into design and architecture. I think these models would also make such a thoughtful wedding gift, for example if the couple met in Glasgow, or even better, whilst studying at the School of Art. There are a range of buildings available and the models are made here in the UK.

Or how about a travel wallet for the globe trotting dads? This one is from John Lewis (one of my favourite shops!). You can't go wrong with classic black leather.

And of course, not forgetting all the handmade gifts and nice gestures that you can do, such as Father's Day Room Service...

Or you could make a handprint tree like this one...

My final idea is a photograph of your little one, presented in a frame. You can buy large 3D letters in Hobbycraft that could be used to recreate this idea...

Do you have any other fabulous Father's Day ideas, gifts or suggestions?

{My Garden}

I had planned a post on my garden and some of the new accessories I had bought to make it a bit more homely, but with the rubbish weather I'm not sure it's relevant at the moment! I had thought I would have been in the garden lots this month, but unfortunately the weather hasn't been great and we've not been able to make as much use of the space as I would have liked.

Anyway... I'll go ahead and post the details and hopefully it will prompt the good weather to come to Glasgow *crosses fingers*

I have two garden spaces. An area to the front of the house which has a paved circle and some pebbles, and a larger space to the back of the house with some decking, bit of grass and some more paving. Both are relatively child-friendly. The back garden in particular is enclosed and safe (although the steps are a tad steep, but toddler has gotten used to these fairly quickly!).

The garden has been very bare i.e. no plants except from the hedges and a couple of bushes. One of the bushes had thorns and wasn't child-friendly at all, so I had it removed.

Over the last few years we have added a wooden playhouse, which I painted sage green, a swing and the most recent addition has been a trampoline. The garden is now definitely a fun place to be for the kiddies.

Toddler having fun on the trampoline (TP Toys, 8ft trampoline)

Daughter playing on the swing (TP wooden swing with baby seat)

In addition to the garden toys, I wanted to start thinking about adding some more plants. So off to B&Q I went... absolutely clueless about gardening and not knowing where to start! The staff were brilliant and couldn't have been more helpful (one of them even helped me pack my car with all my new bits and pieces - was very impressed with their customer service) and I very quickly managed to pick out some plants that would be low maintenance. We also chose some herbs that the toddler and I could put into a trough.

My feature plant in the front garden, in memory of my mum.

New pots and plants for the front garden.
Plants all from B&Q. Grey pot from B&Q. White pots from Ikea.

New pots & plants from B&Q in the back garden with the fence before it was painted.

The playhouse, plus trough full of herbs that toddler and I planted (from B&Q again!). I used Ronseal Wood Sage paint for the playhouse and love it. Would highly recommend... unlike the Sadolin paint I used for the panels below...

The back garden fence.... I have had major issues with the Sadolin paint I selected. Each tin was a slightly different colour despite being the same batch. Very annoyed and I'm going to have to paint it all again. It was supposed to be a grey colour, but some panels are blue/grey and others are green!?! (you may or may not be able to see the difference in the panels in this photograph, but in real life it's very obvious and it basically looks a bit of a mess)

So the kids are sorted, the plants are well underway, but what have I got in terms of furniture for the grown ups? I do have a table and benches from Next on the deck area, but they have seen better days and they haven't been cared for properly. I'm hoping to tart them up a bit and give them a lick of paint. In the meantime, I've also bought a set of table and chairs (yes, from B&Q!) for the paved area near the playhouse. I purchased wisely (I hope!) and made the most of the 20% off promotion at the holiday weekend.

I'd ideally like to get a parasol too as our garden gets the sun all day (when it's shining, which isn't often!) and when it is sunny, it's far too sunny for the little people. Once that's in place, I'll nearly be sorted (well, the decking needs treated, the fence panels need re-painted, I've got a border of soil down the length of the garden with no plants... but I'm getting there!!).

I just need some sunny weather now, and perhaps a wee glass of wine :-)

This post has been for the Making It Home linky with Cat from Making It As Mum.
