{M Kitchen}

The kids and I were invited along to the pop-up M Kitchen in St Enoch Square at the weekend - not sure if anyone of you spotted the high-tech truck or tried any of the meals?

Well, I was mighty impressed!

I took along Becky from The Olive Dragonfly and between us and the kids we demolished 12 pots!! They all were delicious.

If you haven't heard of M Kitchen, then let me fill you in... It's basically a development kitchen at Morrisons HQ and it was set up in October 2011. It's a real, working kitchen where eight M Kitchen chefs develop tasty recipes for all the meals that you see in the Morrisons aisles. Hundreds of recipes are tasted each month and can be tweaked as many as 13 times. The development recipe is transferred out for scale-up but then it comes back to the M Kitchen where the chefs make sure that it still tastes the same as their original meal. The scientist in me loves that part!

There are 400 lines in the M Kitchen range and I've now tried a good handful of them.

First up was the Taste of Home range and we tried the sausage and mash. I've had other sausage and mash ready meals and the quality of the sausage in this one was top notch. I'd certainly be happy giving this to my children for dinner. This meal contains two British pork sausages with mashed potato and onion gravy, for just £2.20.

Here's the littlest enjoying the sausage and mash!

From the Taste of Italy range we sampled the Sausage Pasta Bake and it was really good too - again, you could taste that it was a good quality sausage.

The Sizzlin' BBQ Pork and Spicy Wedges from the Tex Mex meals was also excellent. Then lastly we tried a few curries from the Takeaway range. The chicken breast pieces were again good quality. Sometimes I find it can be a hit or a miss with ready meals.

My only comment would be that the meals we tried were cooked in the oven at the pop-up M Kitchen, and I'm not sure if they will be as good in the microwave, but other than that I'm amazed!

The next day I headed to my local Morrisons and picked up a selection from their Indian Takeaway range to have for dinner. The curries were thrown in the oven and about an hour later I had a beautiful meal in front of me. Just as good as a takeaway too, but probably healthier. The only negative was the naan, but I've never found a shop bought naan that tastes as good as naan from a restaurant. Portion wise the curries are supposed to serve 2, but I ate a whole one to myself. So I'm reckoning that if you've got two hungry adults, then the one pot won't be enough. There was an offer on in my local Morrisons for two Takeaway mains and two Takeaway side dishes for £6 - so we had two currys with a side of rice and naan (and we got some onion bhajis for good measure, 6 for just £1). Fatties ;-)

Please excuse the bubble wrap in the background... I'm still unpacking!!!

At the event at the weekend we were able to speak with one of the chefs from the M Kitchen. I had prepped my son with a few questions... First up is the obvious 'what's your favourite food?' and my son suggested beforehand to me that it would be pizza, and he was right! We also asked what his favourite kitchen tool was. The prediction was that it would be a fork or a spoon. I reckoned it would be a knife. But the kids were right... a spoon it was, a caviar spoon in fact that has little holes in the bottom of it making it ideal for straining food. Who knew!

It was recommended that we try the Morrisons Bistro pizza, which we did and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Becky and I were each given a goodie bag of some more meals to try and home and some vouchers for Morrisons (which I spent on the curry & pizza above!). The kids loved the Tastes of Home Fisherman's Pie (my son did find a considerable sized bone in it which I guess is to be expected, but other than that it was yum!). I had the Beef Casserole, although I'm not a fan of beer and I found the gravy to be a bit too strong with the beer flavour.

All in all I'd give the range a big thumbs up and I definitely recommend you give it a try. All the meals are very well priced and taste great. Excellent value for money. I think I'll be shopping in Morrisons more often now.

I received a goody bag with some M Kitchen meals to try at home and some gift vouchers for Morrisons in exchange for this review. Opinions, as always, are my own.

{Getting Organised - Toys!}

One of the major issues at my new house is lack of space / storage; with that in mind, here are my tips for getting organised with your children's toys.

I like everything to have a place, and this is especially important in my new house as space is at a premium. This goes for everything, not just the toys!

Declutter

Ditch broken toys, duplicate toys and toys that haven't been played with for a long time. I managed to clear a few boxes of baby toys before our house move and I also sold a few larger items on Gumtree.

Set the Rules

We have a defined play area. I'm lucky to have a 'grown-up' room and a 'play' room. From the moment we arrived at the new house, I've been very clear that the front room is for grown-ups and the back, more informal room, is the playroom. So far, so good and all the toys have stayed in the play room. These boundaries are so important.

The kids have soft toys and books in their bedrooms, but that is all. I don't want to encourage playing with noisy toys during or after the bedtime routine. I've learnt from mistakes made at the old house!

Get Organised

I've categorised the toys into boxes/baskets...

In our coffee table drawers we have -
1. People - e.g. Happyland people, Fisher Price Little People & Playmobil characters
2. Animals - e.g. Schleich animals, My Little Pony
3. Musical instruments
4. Lego
5. Small cars

I've used plastic shoe boxes in the coffee table drawer to separate the categories, similar to this under bed storage drawer

In the glass display cabinet drawer we have -
6. Puzzles

And on top of the cabinet we have a basket with -
7. Barbie stuff

In the pantry/cupboard we have -
6. Big cars
7. Bigger toys - e.g. Octonauts / Happyland house
8. Games
9. Arts & Crafts - paper, crayons, pens, stickers, paints, Play Doh etc.

The big toys that we have out on show in the play room are -
10. Kitchen - wooden kitchen plus wooden shopping trolley of play food (the kitchen has a few baskets with a shopping till and tea party stuff)

In the shed -
8. Outdoor toys (in an Ikea storage bag) - football, skittles, tennis rackets

In their bedrooms -

14. Books
15. Soft toys

I need to get clever with storage, and something similar to these fabric carriers on the bag of their bedroom doors would work quite well I think. I think I could knock this up on the sewing machine.

Involve the kids in tidy up time

I'm trying to get into good habits with regard tidying up... if we move activity from dolls to crafting, then we tidy up the dolls first. At nursery they play the Mission Impossible theme tune and the kids know it's time to tidy up. I'm thinking I might download it onto my phone!

Rotation

I used to rotate toys at the old house and would put a bag of toys into the basement out of sight for a few months. If I get enough space in the shed, then I might start this again as it did work really well.

What are your tips on getting organised with toys?

PS I have a {Get Organised} board on Pinterest other ideas :-)

{Fabulous Finds: Toys for Toddlers}

Glasgow Mummy

A lot of people are starting to seriously think about Christmas gifts, so I thought I'd start by sharing a few things I've come across in my search for gifts for my little ones.

You can have a peek here at other online retailers I love and some other previous gift ideas here.

I love traditional wooden toys and Born Gifted have a great selection. I've bought from this online store before and was impressed with the customer service and speedy delivery. They also offer free UK delivery on everything - ideal!

How adorable is this Busy Bead Tree by Skip Hop for little ones, £26.99!

I'm also a fan of toys that encourage role play, and we've had great fun with the wooden kitchen that I bought for my son's Christmas a few years back. This one from Janod is available on the Born Gifted website and I think it looks great. I don't really like the plastic designs, or the kitchens that are bright pink/red, but this one is neutral so would work in most rooms.

My daughter loves dolls, princesses, fairies... and I know she'd love this fabric fairy cottage. Isn't it so cute!!

I definitely recommend that you have a peek at the 20 (yes, twenty!) pages of toys on their website. There's some really beautiful gifts.

Another of my favourite shops is John Lewis . Love this store!! I could happily spend hours perusing their website and/or aisles.

Anyway, my littlest is also a fan of dogs, and how adorable is this Hansa Dachshund Pup!!

We've had a lot of use out of our tea sets, and this baby pink one from John Lewis is super cute!

I've already bought this Lego Batman clock which will be the perfect addition for my son's superhero themed bedroom. It's carefully tucked away in a box in the shed, hidden away until Christmas!

More specifically, my son has asked for Superhero Lego from Santa and my littlest has asked for a prince & princess house.

If only money were no object, as I'd love to buy her this Playmobil Princess Fantasy Castle. How amazing is this!!

What are your 'go to shops' for gifts for kiddies?

{35 at 35: family portrait session}

The other day we ticked off one of the items on my 35 at 35 list, 'Have a family portrait session'.

I was very excited to have a festive mini session with Zoe Stewart Photography. Her work is just beautiful and I've been following her blog for a while now. As soon as she released the dates of the festive sessions, I snapped one up! It was £45 for a 30 minute session.

Zoe has decorated her studio with some amazing bare trees covered with fairy lights and stars, complete with a wooden sledge and furry blankets/rugs. Isn't it just adorable!!

Here's a shot of her daughter Ruby - she's gorgeous {image source}

And again :-) {image source}

Zoe's studio is in Edinburgh. It was really easy to get to & parking wasn't an issue either. We were welcomed in by a very friendly Zoe, and I promptly got the kids changed into their clothes for the shoot. I definitely wasn't risking any accidents in the car on the way through from Glasgow!

The studio is perfect... I was seriously in love with all the accessories and props that Zoe has dotted around the place. So many baskets, blankets and bows for the baby portraits. For the Christmas sessions she had giant marshmallows, candy canes and (non-alcoholic) mulled wine... and the Christmas tunes were on her music player.

I urge you to go look at her website... www.zoestewartphoto.com
The baby photos are just so amazing!

Anyway, we were made to feel very welcome and Zoe was great with my two wee rascals! My son decided that day to start with some crazy smile and kept sticking his chin out (honestly!) but from the sneak peeks it looks like Zoe has managed to get some lovely shots despite his silliness.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the photographs. Watch this space :-)

{A weekend of hot chocolate!}

It's been a weekend of indulgence!

I was through in Edinburgh for the weekend with the new man and I had a brilliant couple of days. I'm not a coffee drinker, so had a few hot chocolates to keep me warm. I would have happily had some mulled wine from the Sunday market in Stockbridge but was driving, next time! Feeling very festive right now! (Remember to enter my competition for Country Living Magazine Christmas Fair tickets here).

On the Royal Mile

Maxi's in Stockbridge

I was sent some tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits from Ringtons to review and keeping with the hot chocolate theme, we did a blind taste test comparing the Ringtons one with the supermarket own brand that I had in my cupboard. I'm a scientist... it had to be done! :-)

A few followers on Instagram had said they liked the look of the one of the left which is the Sainsbury's one, but in actual fact both the man (who didn't know which was which) and myself both preferred the Ringtons.

The teas were also lovely. A friend tried the blackcurrant one and unlike other blackcurrant teas she has tried this one wasn't tart. I quite enjoyed the breakfast tea.

We weren't sure on the coffee, but I think that's because just one little sachet wasn't really enough and probably doubling up would have been the way to go.

The biscuits were good, but nothing that I'd rave about and if they were in a shop I'm not sure I'd choose to buy them.

I'd definitely buy the hot chocolate though, it was yum!

I was sent some complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are my own.

{Trick or Treacle recipes with Lyle's}

I was sent this adorable 'Trick or Treacle' retro tin of treacle from Lyle's today. Isn't it cute!! There was also a helping of Spooky Popcorn Clusters for us to try and it was yummy.

Here are some recipes for you to try:

Lyle's Witch's Severed Fingers

{Ingredients}

125g plain flour (plus extra for rolling)
95g unsalted butter
110g mature Cheddar, grated
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp salt
1tsp Lyle's black treacle
1/2 tsp boiling water
24 flaked almonds

You will also need 2 baking trays lined with parchment paper.

{Method}

Preheat oven to 190 deg C (Fan oven 170) / 375 deg F or Gas mark 5.

Mix flour & butter in food processor for 20-30 sec until they resemble fine breadcrumbs.

Add cheese, cayenne and salt and pulse until dough is formed.

Transfer to lightly floured surface and knead to make smooth dough.

Chill for 20 minutes (cuppa perhaps?).

Roll dough to make a rectangle and cut into 24 strips.

Transfer to the baking trays.

Round the tops of each strip into a fingertip shape.

Brush the tips with a little warm water and press and almond 'nail' into the tip.

Put the treacle into a small bowl and stir in the boiling water.

Brush each 'nail' with the treacle mixture.

Score shallow 'knuckle' lines in each finger and bend it in places to make it look knobbly.

Bake on the top and middle shelves for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool.

Lyle's Spooky Popcorn Clusters

{Ingredients}

100g microwave sweet popcorn
185g unsalted butter
110g Lyle's black treacle
275g light soft brown sugar
2 tbsp Halloween sprinkles

{Method}

Microwave the popcorn according to instructions.

Combine butter, treacle, sugar in a large pan and stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Bring to the boil without stirring until the mixture reaches 149-154 dec C. If you don't have a thermometer you can check it is ready by dropping a tsp into a bowl of cold water. It should harden instantly and when removed be brittle and easy to break. If not, carry on boiling.

Carefully pour the treacle caramel over the popcorn, scatter with Halloween sprinkles and using two large spoons quickly stir it all together before the caramel cools and sets.

Spoon into clusters onto a baking tray and leave to cool and harden.

{The Autumn Tag}

Lauren over at Living in a Boxx has tagged me in 'The Autumn Tag' meme.  Happy to participate :-)

Favourite thing about Autumn...
Like Lauren, it's got to be the leaves changing colour. I love the crispness in the air, being outside wrapped up all snuggly warm (in my super cosy North Face parka!) and the little red cheeks that me and the kids get from being outside!

I'll be drinking...
Mulled wine for me please, or a hot Ribena! At the moment I have a mug of Belvoir Mulled Winter Punch in front of me which I warmed up in the microwave. It's delish!

Favourite scent...
I'm wearing Gucci Guilty Black right now and my other current fragrance is Jean Paul Gaultier Ma Dame, which was a gift from a certain gentleman! ;-)

Best lipstick...
I'm still wearing my M&S lipgloss - I love the coral one. I've also been using Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on my lips.

Go to moisturiser...
I'm awful I know, but I rarely moisturise my skin. For a while I was really good and I was using Dermalogica skin smoothing cream. I need to get back into good habits again... the disarray at the new house isn't helping matters as at the moment I have no idea where any of my creams are!!

Eye colour...
I have been using MAC Shroom, Satin Taupe and Black Tied for over a year now and I love the colours. Can highly recommend them. I'm all for a bit of sparkle & glitter regardless of the season!

Favourite singer/band...
My taste in music is pretty horrendous. I'd also quite happily start listening to Christmas music now if I could get away with it. You have permission to whack me over the head, lol!

Outfit of choice...
At the moment it's got to be my grey skinny jeans from Tu at Sainsburys. They fit well and can be dressed up or down. Love them!

The place to be...
In my new house!! Love it here so much, it already feels like home.

I am going to tag the following bloggers:
You're welcome ;-)

{Fabulous Finds: Wall Lights}

Glasgow Mummy

I am absolutely loving my new house. It's small in my eyes, but in actual fact it's only small to me because I have come from such a massive house and for the past two weeks the new house has been filled with boxes which has made it seem even smaller! The house is a perfect size for me and the two kiddies. We each have our own decent sized bedroom, there is one large-ish bathroom and I have a more formal 'grown-up' living room plus a family room with a little kitchen off from it. Ideal. I felt at home from the moment I opened the front door for the first time.

There are lots of things that I would love to change straightaway but finances aren't going to allow it unfortunately. I'll have to wait a few months to see how the bills work out, how much the council tax is etc etc before I can figure out what my disposable income is going to be.

But in the meantime I can dream, window shop and plan out in my head how I would like everything to be. You'll know by now that I'm a planner!

So, first up is this wall light. I've never been a fan of wall lights, and this one I really don't like (might be a tad better if I replace the bulbs for a start)!

I took to Pinterest and have come up with a variety of other options.

Tell me, why are lights so expensive??

This wall light is in the family room, for which the colours are going to be the same as the kitchen / dining room in the old house. So we're talking green walls (eventually!), and then the fabric (which I'll probably make some cushions out of, again eventually!) is red, teal, grey, orange and green. You can see some pictures of the fabric and get an idea of the colours here and here

I'm in two minds... do I lose the artwork and make the light the feature, or do I find a light that compliments the artwork?

Here's a few of the ideas I've found so far, first up my options for if I lose the artwork...

Big Band Red Wall Lamp, a whopping £430!

Or how about this quirky whiteboard light:

Snakkes Whiteboard Wall Light (can't seem to find this at Liberty & can't get a price offhand from Google)

Amour Neon Light from Graham & Green, £345
Or you can get a variety of different phrases over at notonthehighstreet.com,
how about 'home is where the is' for a mere *cough* £765!

And then if I am to keep the artwork (which I think is more likely as the lights above are way out with my price range!!), here are my ideas:

My current favourite, anglepoise light from Heals - a more reasonable £88

Industrial wall sconce - bare bulb light from IndLights at etsy (£35 plus shipping)

Another industrial option, this time from Holloways of Ludlow. Light is £85 plus £12 for the bulb

More of a classic option...a swing arm wall light in polished chrome (£108)

Cheap and cheerful ceramic wall lamp that I can probably paint in the wall colour, £12.99 on eBay from speedytradelighting

Or a silver picture wall light from the same seller at £19.99:

What are you thoughts? What's your favourite? Do you have any other suggestions? :-)
